Job description

Ian Walker Family Law and Mediation is a specialist Family Law Solicitors and Family Mediation Service based in Honiton Devon. The owner Ian Walker is well known and respected in the local legal community and is the current Chair of the Devon Region of Family Law Solicitors organisation Resolution.

We have contracts for Legal Aid with the Legal Aid Agency for Family Law and Family Mediation. We undertake the full range of family law work including Care Proceedings and Divorce.

We are looking for a Personal Assistant/Paralegal/Practice Manager to work with Ian Walker both to manage our assisting caseload as well as helping to develop the practice and undertake admin tasks.

  • Clean driving licence
  • Strong personal skills/team player


  • Previous experience of working in a solicitors practice and family law
  • Previous experience of legal aid forms and billing.

The expectation would be that they would work as a PA in terms of organizing the office and undertaking Admin work. There will be some  fee earning work on a paralegal basis. This will include client contact. We use digital dictation so there will be no copy typing.

We are not looking for someone who would be seeking a training contract. This is not a traditional secretarial role

This is a key role. We are hoping to expand our service over the next 18 months. You will will be key to this.

We are based at the East Devon Business Centre in Honiton. These are modern offices with parking. There are other businesses in the Centre. There will likely be occasional trips from the office to Exeter and Taunton.

Whilst the job is advertised as full time, there is also scope for some flexibility in working hours. We will consider applicants who would wish to work around the school day including on a part time basis. We are also willing to think flexibly about working hours in school holidays. For compressed hours/part-time to be an option this would be five days per week during school term with some working during school holidays.


The successful candidate will be educated to at least A level / higher or equivalent


The full-time salary range we had in mind was £17,000.00 – 22,000.00 per year with a discretionary bonus. Salary would depend upon experience and qualification and would be on a pro rata basis if full-time hours were not worked.

Being part of the team

This is an exciting opportunity. Personality and enthusiasm are as important as experience. We are a small practice and so it is important that we can all get on together and be able to enjoy work. The role is not being a small cog in a large organisation but rather being a large cog in a small organisation. This means it will include both taking responsibility for tasks and also doing mundane tasks. Communication between the team is extremely important as is being able to take pleasure out of making a difference to the lives of our clients. As the practice grows there is very much scope for the role to develop.
